Geof tries to interfere in the quarrel between the two women, but each time he is attacked by one or the other or both. The play was adapted into a film of the same title in Sex Dating. The central character, a young girl named Jo, lives in a decrepit flat in Salford with her mother, who is apt to wander off in pursuit of men with money. Geof has bought a doll for Jo to practise handling the baby but Jo flings it to the ground because it is the wrong colour:
Jo becomes pregnant by a black sailor and is cared for by Geoffrey, a young gay friend, until her mother ousts him in what could be a burst of suppressed maternal love or a display of jealous control-freakery.
Thus she had her first sexual experience with Jo's father, a "not very bright man," a "bit retarded".
